The Five-Year Cycle of Inquiry

GATE Academy

Inquiry is a core class keyed to a five-year cycle that spans prehistory to the present day. In the 2023–24 cycle, our curriculum is framed within the historical window of 500 BCE – 1400 CE. Each year divides into six units of inquiry — three devoted to the sciences, three to social studies and the humanities — so every student encounters a broad range of content inside a shared historical framework.

The Six Strands of Inquiry
Inquiry 1
Life Sciences
Framed by the National Science Education standards.
Inquiry 2
Science, Technology & Societies
Framed by the National Science Education standards.
Inquiry 3
Earth & Space Sciences
Framed by the National Science Education standards.
Inquiry 4
Social Studies — Humankind's Rules
How humans create rules to govern actions among themselves — in the household, in community (sports, town, clubs, schools), and in institutions both private and governmental (local to multinational).
Inquiry 5
Social Studies — Arts & Culture
How humans express feelings and ideas through the senses — written (text), aural (sound), visual, culinary (food), physical, and olfactory (smell).
Inquiry 6 · Summer
Physical Sciences

Upper School — Individualized Inquiry

6th – 8th Grades

In Upper School, inquiry becomes increasingly individualized. Project scope and reach broaden with each student's interests, while the historical framework and six strands continue to anchor the work. Two examples from recent years:

6th – 7th · Inquiry 4

The US in World War II

Students conduct individual research in original historical source materials — including interviews with living survivors — then produce "newsreel"-style films on the topics they uncover.

Topics have included
D-Day Pearl Harbor Concentration camps Japanese internment Gen. Douglas MacArthur Annexation of Poland Siege of Leningrad
7th – 8th · Inquiry 3

Early Studies of the Atom

Students study subatomic particles, their production methods, and the theory behind them — building physical models of atoms and particles along the way, and staging "rap battles" that argue opposing ideas in physics.
